Default Mac Web Sharing

I just discovered this file:

Code:
Macintosh HD:Users:username:Sites:index.html
which states the following:

Quote:
Open System Preferences and click Sharing, then select Web Sharing.

Your done. Your site is now available on your private network at home or work.

If you’re connected to the Internet, it can also be available to friends everywhere. Just send them the address shown in Sharing preferences.
Apache Power

Web Sharing is built on the Apache web server, an industry standard technology included with Mac OS X. For more information about the Apache web server, see the Apache manual.
Am I correct in assuming this means my 'Sites' folder can function as the root of a web directory, providing hosting space for a website? That would be awesome, if I could do things like that locally, though I'd have no user support or anything like when you pay for space, but I wondered after reading that. Anybody know about this?

Yes this will allow for a very basic web site to be housed locally on that mac computer. It should be known that if you have any firewalls, routers, etc you'll need to find a dedicated IP to reference for Internet (not intranet, as you'd use your local IP) access.

Running things like mysql, etc will require you install it on your
machine and configure it appropriately.

Hope this helps
